Support for Learning Service (SLS) Prevent Resources

Prevent Triangle of InterventionThe SLS Prevent team has developed a range of Prevent resources for schools. These are designed to help them meet the criteria laid down by the Prevent Duty and safeguarding legislation.

Since 2012, it has been required by law for teachers "not to undermine fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs."

The aim of Prevent is to prevent people being drawn into violence extremism. it is a safeguarding issue and safeguarding people from radicalisation is no different from safeguarding them from other forms of harm.

These resources are designed to help schools ensure they are meeting expectations regarding the Prevent Duty.

In Tower Hamlets we take the view that the Prevent agenda is a continuation of the good work schools already do in promoting tolerance, diversity and individual liberty. Therefore, the subject matter that can be discussed in schools should not be limited to radicalisation and extremism, and may well include topics that range from prejudice in general to e-safety and possibly how Britain should respond to the refugee crisis. What is essential is that young people can discuss controversial issues in a safe environment and that they are encouraged to be critical thinkers.

There are also further materials, including tutor discussions, assemblies, and additional lessons which can be used at will.

Please ensure that you read the following documents before you use our resources:

  1. Tower Hamlets' Prevent Resources
  2. Understanding Tower Hamlets' Prevent Guidance for Schools

The Prevent resources and training are FREE for Tower Hamlets schools and institutions who work with young people.
