Clean Air Day at Tower Hamlets Town Hall
Celebrating Clean Air Day
The council celebrated Clean Air Day, the UK’s largest campaign promoting cleaner, healthier air with a vibrant pop-up stall outside the Town Hall. The event, organised by the Pollution Team, encouraged residents, staff and visitors to learn how air quality affects health and discover ways they can contribute to cleaner air.
The stall offered a range of engaging activities. A highlight was the pedal-powered smoothie bikes, which proved popular with both adults and children. Participants blended their own smoothies using pedal power, promoting the benefits of active travel. This hands-on activity reinforced the message that cycling produces zero pollution and is a simple way to help reduce emissions in the borough.
Air Quality Progress Board
Visitors also explored the Air Quality Progress Board, which presented clear visuals showing how air quality in Tower Hamlets has changed over time. This allowed residents to see the impact of local initiatives to reduce pollution. The Air Quality myth buster board encouraged people to open panels revealing surprising facts, challenging common misconceptions about air quality in the area.
Posters from the national Clean Air Day campaign were displayed, demonstrating the strong link between clean air and healthy communities.
Air Aware
The team also showcased Air Aware a free online tool offering live air quality data, health advice, and interactive maps.
A team effort
The Pollution Team was joined by representatives from Queen Mary University and the NHS, who spoke with residents about the health impacts of poor air quality and provided practical advice on reducing exposure.
The event successfully combined fun, education and action, highlighting the council’s commitment to tackling air pollution. Positive feedback from attendees showed how much residents valued the chance to engage directly with council officers and health experts on this important issue.
