Advice and assessment
The energy efficiency and fuel poverty service's main function is to fulfil the council's statutory duty (as the energy conservation authority for Tower Hamlets) by reducing domestic energy consumption by 30 per cent from 1996 levels by 2010. It does this by encouraging the use of sustainable energy – to extend access to affordable warmth and combat fuel poverty.
The service was set up to provide a focus for domestic energy efficiency and respond to the Home Energy Conservation Act 1995 and is now part of the sustainable development team based at Mulberry Place.
Council officers can give telephone advice about saving energy in the home. They can also take you through a series of questions to determine the availability of grant-related assistance or recommend ways of improving the energy efficiency levels within the home to increase comfort levels and save money on fuel bills.
Residents over 60 years old can also have advisors visit the home to identify improvement areas, grant-related assistance, fuel switching advice and general energy-saving advice.
