What is a personal budget?
A personal budget is an amount of money from the council to purchase support. The idea behind personal budgets is to give people more choice and control over the support they get.
Personal budgets can be managed by the council on your behalf, or they can be in the form of a direct payment. If the council manages your personal budget, you will not have to handle any money but you will still have a choice over how the money is spent. If you decide to take a direct payment, this can be paid to you or someone you trust.
Who can get a personal budget?
Personal budgets are available to people who need council-funded support from adult social care (see who can get support). This tends to be people who have very serious needs and things they need help with.
We know that friends or family members who care for their loved ones can sometimes need support themselves. Carers who are in serious need of support may be eligible to get a personal budget in their own right. Visit the who can get support page for more information.
How much can I receive through a Personal Budget?
There is no maximum or minimum amount. Personal budgets are designed around each individual, so the amount is generally based on the cost to the council of meeting each person’s specific needs.
Are there any other rules and options I should know about?
There are a number of general rules and options around personal budgets and direct payments. These set out who can and cannot receive a personal budget, how an amount is calculated, how personal budgets or direct payments can be used, and how they are monitored once they are in place.
Tower Hamlets is currently developing a personal budget and Direct Payments Policy which will set out these rules and options in more detail.
