Young Mayor of Tower Hamlets

The Young Mayor is elected every two years to represent the views of young people across the borough at the highest level. They work closely with the Tower Hamlets Executive Mayor, Chief Executive, Directors and the Tower Hamlets Youth Council and other key stakeholders locally and nationally.

This year, a new young mayor and five deputies will be elected for a two-year term. The Young Mayor and deputies will lead on the following areas:

  • social and economic development
  • communications
  • environment
  • health and wellbeing
  • community.

Can you be the next Young Mayor or deputy?

Two years ago, sixteen-year-old Fetuma Hassan from Mulberry Girls School was elected as the Young Mayor of Tower Hamlets.

Who can apply to become Young Mayor?

Anyone aged 13 to 17 who lives or studies in Tower Hamlets can apply. If you have a passion for making a difference and want to be a change maker, this opportunity is for you!

What does the Young Mayor Team do?

The Young Mayor Team represents young people locally, regionally and nationally. They work with councillors, decision-makers and the Youth Council to ensure the voice of young people in Tower Hamlets is heard.

They aim to:

  • strengthen community relations
  • influence decisions
  • speak for young people
  • run projects, campaigns, and events. 

What role does the Deputy Young Mayor play?

In 2023, the Young Mayor deputies took on roles that led the following areas:

  • Social and economic development
  • Communications
  • Environment
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Community

What's the election process?

The Young Mayor election will be conducted digitally. Poll cards will be issued to all pupils and students via secondary schools and sixth forms in Tower Hamlets.

The poll cards will have QR codes that can be scanned using mobile devices, directing voters to the platform to cast their votes.
