Pollution
Tower Hamlets Council aims to maintain the air, land and water
in the borough to the highest possible quality. We have monitoring
stations at locations around the borough where levels of pollutants
are continually recorded and have produced draft action plans
containing proposed measures to reduce pollution in the area.
In addition the council also investigates noise pollution, the
control of hazardous substances and is responsible for enforcing
the smoking ban.
Air quality
The Government's national air quality
strategy, launched in 2000, sets national air quality standards and
objectives. It is Tower Hamlets responsibility to carry out a
review and assessment of current levels of air pollution in the
borough and to predict whether the national objectives will be
met.
Noise
pollution
Complaints about excessive noise are
investigated by the council who can take action if the noise is
considered to be a nuisance.
Water quality
The council is responsible for the routine
testing of both drinking water and recreational water.
