Roads, highways
& pavements
The council is responsible for a range of
services supplied for the maintenance of the roads and pavements in
the borough. As a local authority, the council takes on the legal
responsibility for roads or highways that are legally adopted by
Tower Hamlets Council.
Services provided include road and pavement
repairs, the provision of cycle lanes and management of street
parking, including disabled parking.
The council shares these responsibilities in
Tower Hamlets with other highways authorities, most notably
Transport for London, which is itself responsible for some roads,
highways, structures and bridges within the borough.
Cycle lanes and routes
Tower Hamlets Council encourages cycling to help improve mobility, reduce
traffic congestion and improve residents’ health. Find out about
cycle routes and take a look at the borough Cycle Map.
Pavement maintenance and lighting
Pavements can suffer very badly from
overriding vehicles. The council is responsible for the maintenance of roads, including pavements and
footways. The council is also responsible for the design and
maintenance of streetlights and
traffic signals.
Road works and closures
The Council’s Transportation & Highways
team controls temporary road traffic restrictions that might affect
the streets we live and work on. Here you can find information on
road works and road closures.
