Girls football team can continue to play at Stepney Green

  • Council apologises for error that moved weekly time slot

Tower Hamlets Council has apologised to Vicky Park Rangers and reinstated its weekly time slot in Stepney Green after an error moved its regular booking time.

The council owns several football pitches which are used by community organisations. However, there is much greater demand compared to available time slots, particularly during the prime-time slots of 6 to 8pm on weekdays.

The council reviewed the booking times for organisations across the borough to maximum community use of our pitches, however unfortunately this led to the error. The council has a duty to ensure access by groups with protected characteristics such as women and girls which is why Vicky Park Rangers slot has been reinstated.

On Friday evening, the council contacted Vicky Park Rangers to apologise for the error and confirm that they would still be able to play in their original Thursday timeslot at Stepney Green Astroturf.

Raj Mistry, Interim Corporate Director for Communities, said:

“Vicky Park Rangers can continue to play in Stepney Green during their original time slot. We are sorry for the worry the error has caused.

“Tower Hamlets is a champion of making sport accessible for everyone and supporting more girls and women into sport is one of our strategic priorities.”

Taner Baycanli, Club Chairman at Vicky Park Rangers, said:

“This was obviously a shock for us, but we appreciate the measures the council has taken to put things right and reinstate our slot at Stepney Green Astroturf.”
