Six young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) were celebrated for completing their apprenticeship with Tower Hamlets Council on Thursday 5 June.

Organised by the council’s Supported Employment Team, the event brought together apprentices, families, mentors, providers and partners to celebrate the progress of the first cohort of apprentices and talk about the life changing impact for individuals and their families.

Participants who had completed their two years in post at the council were recognised and presented with a certificate.

Three of the apprentices have been offered employment opportunities at the council, and others are being supported to find their next role.

The celebration also recognised the collaborative effort behind the programme’s success, including families, council staff, providers and partners, who have all played a vital role in creating inclusive employment opportunities.

Cllr Musthak Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Enterprise, Skills and Growth, said:

“The success of our SEND Apprenticeship Programme demonstrates what’s possible when we focus on inclusion, opportunity, and personalised support. These apprentices are not only building careers – they’re challenging expectations and paving the way for others.

“Each person on this programme has been an asset to our workforce, and we are incredibly proud of everyone who has completed their apprenticeship with us.”

The programme reflects Tower Hamlets Council’s commitment to supporting residents with SEND to gain work experience, develop skills, and take confident steps into long-term employment.

Shakil Shariyar, who took part in the SEND apprenticeship scheme, said:

“The apprenticeship gave me a sense of passion and confidence. I got a two year paid apprenticeship out of it – it was a great experience.

“I’m glad that I finally got a job because I waited a long time for it. I’m so grateful for all the support that I’ve received from my bosses and mentor. Dreams can truly happen if you’re patient for it.”
