Building on council investment in cricket across the borough, the Mayor’s Cricket Cup tournament returned for a second successful year, with trophies presented in four categories.

The sports festival brought together children and adults, boys and girls and men and women from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.

Sixteen adult teams and 12 junior and youth teams took part in the tournament across the first weekend of September.

Sixty-three exciting matches, played at Victoria Park, saw London Sportif, Wanstead Ladies, WH Eagles and Tigers lift trophies in the men’s, women’s, under 17’s and under 11’s categories respectively.

Lutfur Rahman, Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said: “It has been great to see another successful cricket cup tournament. Huge congratulations to all players who took part and helped make this year’s competition an inspiring festival of sport.”

The competition follows council investment in new cricket facilities at Victoria Park and Millwall Park, with plans underway for additional practice facilities at Stepney Green Park and King Edward Memorial Park.

Cllr Kamrul Hussain, Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, said: “I would like to thank our partners Capital Kids Cricket and London Cricket League for supporting the delivery of this year’s Mayor’s Cricket Cup competition and our sponsors Canary Wharf Group, REGAL and Guildmore for their contributions which enabled the council to deliver this fantastic event.”
