The view across Trinity Square Gardens to The Merchant Navy Memorial
Merchant Navy Day on 3 September each year, an official national event, pays tribute to the contribution made to UK’s economy and defence by the Merchant Navy.
Its flag, the Red Ensign, will be flown from such as 10 Downing Street; Tower Bridge and Tower Hamlets Town Hall.
Everyone is invited to join in that tribute by attending the Merchant Navy Day Commemorative Service at The Merchant Navy Memorial. This bears 36,040 names, more than any other Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorial in the UK. They are those of men and women aged from 13 to 74 and of at least 103 nationalities who, in the British merchant service, died as the result of enemy action in either of the two World Wars or Falklands Campaign. Civilians all, they have no grave but the sea.
The Band of HM Royal Marines, Portsmouth, will head the Merchant Navy Parade of Standards.
