Local campaign and council partnership help secure future of Boundary Estate Community Launderette

The Boundary Estate Community Launderette

A much-loved community launderette at the heart of the historic Boundary Estate has secured its future after working with Tower Hamlets Council to tackle rising rent costs.

Located beside the iconic Arnold Circus, the Boundary Estate Community Launderette has served residents and local businesses for more than 30 years. When rising costs and rent pressures threatened its future in 2024, local people came together to champion the service, with more than 2,500 people signing a petition in support of the launderette.

Listening to residents and recognising the importance of community-led spaces, Tower Hamlets Council has worked with organisations across the borough to introduce its Community Benefit Rent Reduction Scheme, helping valued community assets remain affordable and sustainable.

As part of this commitment, the council has transferred the Boundary Estate Community Launderette into its Community Premises Portfolio. This enables the organisation to access a Community Benefit Rent Reduction of up to 80%, supporting its transition to a Community Interest Company (CIC) and helping to secure its long-term future.

The Boundary Estate Community Launderette is a not-for-profit community enterprise established by local residents in 1992 to provide affordable laundry facilities for residents and small businesses in Weavers Ward, between Bethnal Green and Shoreditch. Situated on the historic Boundary Estate, widely recognised as the world's oldest surviving council housing estate, the launderette has grown into a valued community asset and social hub.

The service is particularly important in an area affected by damp and mould, supporting overcrowded households and those without adequate laundry facilities at home. Alongside its practical role, the launderette provides a welcoming space where people can meet, connect and build relationships, helping to tackle loneliness and strengthen community ties.

A spokesperson for the Boundary Estate Community Launderette said:

"Our Launderette is clearly loved by the local community. This is evident from the involvement and volunteering of the Boundary Tenants and Residents Association and many others to ensure it continues to thrive."

Councillor Abu Talha Chowdhury, Cabinet Member for Finance, Assets and Governance, said:

"The overwhelming support shown for the Boundary Estate Community Launderette demonstrated just how important this service is to local people. We listened and worked closely with the organisation to find a solution that protects this valued community asset for the future.

"Community spaces like this bring people together, provide vital support and help create stronger, more connected neighbourhoods. Through initiatives such as our Community Benefit Rent Reduction Scheme, we are investing in the organisations that make Tower Hamlets such a vibrant and caring borough.

"We know that many community organisations continue to face financial pressures, which is why we are committed to working in partnership with residents and local groups to help them thrive and continue serving our communities."
