Columbia Road Flower Market has been named Best Market Attraction at the Great British Market Awards, marking its second year in a row winning a national title.
The popular Sunday market was recognised as a world-famous destination that attracts visitors from across the UK and around the world, while continuing to support local traders and small businesses.
This year, Columbia Road was the only London retail market to receive an award at the national ceremony.
The award follows last year’s success when the historic market was named Britain’s Best Small Outdoor Market.
Columbia Road Market has been a key part of the East End for more than 150 years. What began as a covered market in the 19th century has grown into one of London’s most recognisable and colourful markets. Every Sunday, thousands of people visit the street to buy plants and flowers and to enjoy the independent shops, cafés and local character that make the area unique.
The Great British Market Awards are organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA). The awards celebrate markets that make a strong contribution to their local economy, culture and community.
Ross, a long-term trader at Columbia Road Market, said:
“We’re thrilled to win be an award-winning market for the second year in a row. This is a unique market; you won’t find anything like it anywhere else and that’s why people keep coming to visit. I’ve been trading here for 35 years, and it’s always a good vibe on a Sunday morning.”
Cllr Abu Talha Choudhury, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, said:
“Winning a national award for the second-year running is a fantastic achievement and shows just how special Columbia Road Flower Market is.
“The market is one of Tower Hamlets’ most loved destinations. It brings visitors from across the world while supporting local traders, independent businesses and our local economy.
“We are incredibly proud to support our markets and the communities around them, and this award recognises the hard work and passion of the traders, and everyone involved in making Columbia Road such a success.”
Columbia Road Flower Market is open every Sunday from 8am to 3pm. Visitors can find out more information about the market and local businesses by visiting the market’s website.
