Adults Mental Health Strategy

Statistically, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year, and in Tower Hamlets there is evidence to suggest this figure may be higher still.  Many of us have direct personal experience of mental ill health, or are close to someone who has.  Despite this, the stigma surrounding mental health still lingers and can have a devastating impact on people’s lives. For people who need support, there is a need to ensure that services are accessible, personalised and joined up: in short, people should be able to get the right help at the right time.

What we do to support people with mental health problems is a key component of this strategy, but it is not the whole picture.  The term ‘mental health’ is a broad term, encompassing a spectrum of positive and negative mental health states.  Mental health – like physical health – is a fundamental part of all our lives.  So this strategy is both for people who have or are at an increased risk of mental health problems, and for the general population in terms of their wellbeing.

Our aim is to make a difference to the mental health and wellbeing of everyone who lives, works or studies in Tower Hamlets.  To do this, we have brought together those who are in a position to help make that difference. This includes local Councillors; the Council (including social care, education, housing, environment, public health and employment services); the NHS; community groups; other key partners (including housing providers and the police); and, most importantly, organisations which represent the voice of local people, such as Healthwatch Tower Hamlets.
