Tower Hamlets council has launched a new and dedicated WhatsApp channel for council tenants and leaseholders, designed to improve communication and keep residents informed about their homes, estates, and neighbourhoods.
The initiative follows feedback gathered earlier this year, when residents said they wanted more timely updates and identified WhatsApp as their preferred channel. In response, the council has delivered a solution that meets these expectations.
The new channel is part of the Your Voice, Our Action Improvement Programme which underpins improvements to the Housing Management Service. This programme was introduced after the council self-referred to the Regulator of Social Housing in October 2024, demonstrating its commitment to transparency and service improvement.
Key features of the WhatsApp channel include:
- Secure and private access with numbers remaining hidden
- Regular updates on estates, safety reminders, and local housing events
- Opportunities for residents to contribute to housing policies
- Monthly reporting on Tenant Satisfaction Measures, covering repairs, caretaking, anti-social behaviour, and communication standards
By sharing performance data, progress updates, and steps being taken to improve service delivery, the council aims to build trust and accountability while ensuring residents remain at the heart of housing management decisions.
Cllr Kabir Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Inclusive Development and Housebuilding, said:
“Our residents are at the heart of everything we do in Tower Hamlets, and housing remains a key priority for us. This new WhatsApp channel is a direct response to what tenants and leaseholders told us they wanted and provides an easier way for people to stay connected and informed.
“By strengthening communication, we’re taking an important step toward giving every tenant and leaseholder a voice in shaping the future of social housing in our borough.”
