Tower Hamlets schools lead London in Healthy Schools awards

healthy lives celebration event

Schools across Tower Hamlets have been recognised as leaders across London for their commitment to improving children and young people’s health and wellbeing.

The borough has the highest number of Healthy Schools London Silver and Gold Awards in the capital, and the highest proportion of schools with the Bronze Award, with around 84 per cent of schools holding the accreditation or working towards it.

These achievements were celebrated at the annual Healthy Lives Celebration event, hosted by the council at the Town Hall on Thursday 11 June.

Around 160 pupils and school staff from 21 local schools attended the event, which recognised the wide-ranging work delivered over the past year to support healthier lifestyles.

A total of 30 awards were presented for Healthy Schools London awards, as well as Asthma and Allergy Friendly School status, with several schools receiving multiple awards.

Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, said:

“Tower Hamlets is leading the way across London in supporting children and young people to live healthier lives, and I am incredibly proud of the achievement of our schools.

“These awards recognise the dedications of teachers, school staff, pupils and families, who are working together every day to promote healthy eating, physical activity and emotional wellbeing.

“By taking a whole-school approach, we are helping to give every child in our borough the best possible start in life, and the foundations they need for a healthy future.”

Cllr Faysal Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Life Chances, said:

“It’s fantastic to see so many Tower Hamlets schools being recognised for their commitment to health and wellbeing.

“Our Healthy Scholls programme is about much more than awards – it’s about creating environments where children can thrive, build healthy habits and feel supported both physically and emotionally.

“The fact that we have the highest number of schools achieving Healthy Schools London awards is an incredible achievement, and I want to thank all of our schools, teachers and pupils for making this happen.”

The event also showcased initiatives such as Fantastic Food in Schools, which supports schools to create healthier food environments and encourages positive eating habits through approaches like family-style dining.

During the celebration, pupils took part in a range of interactive activities led by partners including West Ham United Foundation and London Marathon, helping them to learn more about staying active and making healthy choices.

Tower Hamlets was also presented with an award from London Marathon following the borough having the highest number of schools (75) signed up to the London Mini Marathon in Schools initiative.
