Tommy Flowers exhibition

Part of Photomonth, this exhibition presents a collaborative heritage project by photographers and curators Andrew Saunders and Garry Hunter.

As the first tranche of a longterm research and outreach programme, Náutica unearths a small selection of the 80 million analogue images stored in the Getty Archive by the Lower Lea in east London where only 2% of this historical collection has so far been digitised.

Exhibited within the vast pontoon that supports the Victorian steamship SS Robin - the only vessel of its class still fully intact - this investigation reveals documentation of shipbuilding on the River Lea in the latter half of the 19th century, right where Robin was built, here in 1889-90. As this project develops, more long-unseen imagery of other key shipbuilding sites will emerge, as well as the European ports Robin visited.
