Description
Join Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives as they mark Black History Month with a closing event for the Communities of Liberation exhibition.

Dr Peggy Brunache, Senior Lecturer in Public History and Archaeology at the University of Glasgow will lead a critical exploration of the 'runaways' advertisements used in the exhibition, which were published in national newspapers in the 17th and 18th centuries, to locate and recapture enslaved people who had escaped in pursuit of freedom.

Through guided discussion and analysis, participants will be encouraged to look beyond these records and recognise the courage, resistance, and humanity of these individuals.

The session will also address the challenging realities of working with these historical sources, including the use of racist, derogatory, and dehumanising language. Participants will be supported in critically analysing this language, understanding the historical context in which it was produced, and considering its impact both then and now.

This workshop offers an opportunity to engage with the lived experiences of people who resisted enslavement, while reflecting on how archives can both obscure and reveal stories of resilience, agency, and liberation.
