A free portrait photography session exploring Black history, identity and the legacy of trade between the West Indies and London’s historic docks.
Led by photographer Adam French, whose family originates from St Vincent in the Caribbean, the session will introduce participants to portrait-making techniques inspired by mid-19th-century photographic processes.
Working collaboratively with Adam, participants will help create a series of contemporary portraits celebrating members of Tower Hamlets’ Black community—particularly those whose contributions are not always recognised. This includes volunteers, teachers, carers, nurses and local community heroes who generously give their time to support others and strengthen their communities.
The portraits created during the session will form part of the wider Sugar Towers: Legacy of Trade exhibition. They will be presented alongside previously unseen archival photographs exploring the industries of Leamouth and the historical relationship between sugar, the West Indies and London’s docks.
