The council's trading standards service advises on and enforces a wide range of laws designed to try to ensure the safety of consumer goods and products and the protection of consumers in the borough.
Product safety is one of the most important areas dealt with by the Tower Hamlets trading standards office. The Trading standards service also has an important role in advising businesses on the safety of consumer goods, as well as investigating unsafe products and prosecuting unscrupulous traders.
The safety of consumer goods and products has been improved in the UK since the introduction of the Consumer protection act 1987 and the General product safety Regulations 2005. The increased number of European directives being included in UK regulations also means more protection for consumers.
