Product safety

The council's trading standards service advises on and enforces a wide range of laws designed to ensure the safety of consumer goods and products and the protection of consumers in the borough. One of the most important areas is product safety.

We advise businesses on the safety of consumer goods, investigate unsafe products, and prosecute unscrupulous traders.

The safety of consumer goods and products has been improved in the UK since the introduction of the Consumer Protection Act 1987 and the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. The increased number of European Directives being included in UK regulations also means more protection for consumers.

Further information

Copies of the Consumer Protection Act 1987 and the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 can be obtained from Office of Public Sector Information, or a copy can be inspected at the council offices where you may also obtain further help or advice.
