Street Leaders
What is a Street Leader?
As part of improving our waste service and the cleanliness of our streets and parks, we are building a network of Tower Hamlets residents who will help us tackle environmental problems in their local area and beyond.
Through Street Leader support and their increased reporting of on street issues, we aim to develop stronger ties with residents across the borough and work together to improve our shared spaces.
By volunteering as a Street Leader, you will:
- have a dedicated, direct line to the council to report litter and flytipping for quick removal
- be able to organise neighbourhood clean ups with council support
- be entered into a regular prize draw as a thank you.
What do I need to do?
We want Street Leaders to report environmental problems regularly using a priority pathway on the council’s Find it Fix it app. With full support from the council, we want our Street Leaders to help us make Tower Hamlets cleaner and greener for everyone who lives, works and visits our borough.
What else can I do?
Street leaders can also help by volunteering to promote positive behaviours in their communities:
They can share information on council services, including:
- what the council can and can’t do
- how and what to report
- what council initiatives are available to residents:
- encourage ownership of our shared spaces by organising, or supporting, volunteer-led activities including:
- litter picking
- graffiti removal
- flyer removal
- fence painting
- weeding/planting
- community engagement events to promote better domestic waste management (including more recycling in the borough)
All are eligible for council support
Why should I help?
While we provide extensive environmental services across the borough, our teams and operatives can’t be everywhere, doing everything, all at once. By partnering with our residents in this way, we can focus our resources on problem areas and improve both our reach and engagement with local communities.
To reward the time, energy and effort, we commit to the following:
- We will prioritise Street Leader reporting on our Find It Fix It app and provide feedback
- We will provide basic training on how to report, what to look for and advise on any health and safety and offer support around planned community activities.
