Using public transport

London's public transport is more accessible than ever, with plans to make the whole network even more accessible, especially for elderly and disabled passengers, in future.

Transport for London (TfL) provides a huge amount of information about public transport accessibility.

Use the online journey planner to plan a journey tailored to your specific needs. For example; you might want to select the options to avoid buses or Tube stations without lifts.

If you're travelling around by National Rail you can plan your rail journey using the information provided by National Rail.

If you're nervous about travelling by public transport, TfL offer free Travel Mentoring that can help you to plan and undertake independent journeys around London. It's a free service, available Monday to Friday from 08:00-18:00.

In addition to advice before you travel, you'll find that there are a range of facilities, across the transport network, to help you have a successful journey. These include:

  • Places to sit at all rail, underground, DLR and tram stations and at, or near, the majority of bus stops.
  • Dedicated seats on all modes of transport.
  • Toilet facilities at a number of underground stations (PDF). You'll need a Radar key to use these toilets. Radar keys are available for a small charge from Disability Rights UK.
  • Passenger information provided via electronic signs and announcements at all transport hubs and on modes of public transport - providing you with clear and up-to-date information about the service.

Discounts on public transport

People with disabilities and older people can travel for free across London and for free on bus journeys outside of London. To do this you'll need to apply for a Freedom Pass.

Freedom Pass holders travel free on the Tube, Overground, DLR and all bus services. Travel on rail services is also free but on some routes the pass isn't valid before 09:30am.
