Shared Lives - Chris' story

Chris size 350

Chris’ journey into Shared Lives began after he lost his mother who he was very close to and was his main source of support. Chris, 54, shared at the time he was feeling low, socially isolated, and would like to take part in more activities. Chris’ Social Worker, Sonja referred Chris to Shared Lives for day support, and Sonja then became his Shared Lives Coordinator.

Support

Chris has been part of Shared Lives since July 2022. Although there have been some bumps in the road, he now sees his Shared Lives Carer, Sarah twice every week. Sarah has been key in developing a strong support network around Chris. She shared that Chris has “built that relationship with me to ask questions if there is a problem” and “he has become better at using the support available”. Chris shared his favourite thing about Shared Lives is “going on trips” and that Sarah is “very helpful”.

Activities

  • Chris also now attends Create Day Centre 3 days a week.
  • Chris is part of an inspiring group called ‘Empowering Voices’ that make it easier for people with a learning disability to access services.
  • Chris has also completed paid work experience in the Create café.

New relationships and experiences

Through Shared Lives, Chris has had lots of new relationships and experiences too, including his first holiday since 1987! Chris, Sarah and another supported person went to Great Yarmouth, staying in a caravan for the weekend. Chris said he enjoyed:

  • going to the aquarium
  • playing bingo
  • swimming

Chris used to swim, and it sparked his interest again – he and Sarah have plans to start their own ‘swimming club’.

Thank you to Chris for sharing his story and to Sarah for her fantastic dedication as a Shared Lives Carer!
