How do I become a Shared Lives carer?
Being a Shared Lives Carer is an extremely rewarding role, and we are always looking for new carers to join. It can be your full-time role or can work flexibly on top of existing work or caring commitments.
Shared Lives Carers offer support and care from their own homes to people who need support to live independently. This may include supporting the person to:
- Look after themselves.
- Keep healthy and active.
- Learn new skills.
- Meet people.
- Enjoy hobbies and activities.
- Manage their money.
- Share tasks like cooking, cleaning and gardening.
As a Shared Lives Carer, not only will you be making a real difference in someone’s life — you’ll also receive payment for the type of support you provide.
- Long-term support – earn between £300 and £400 per week.
- Respite support – earn between £79 and £102 per night.
- Day support – paid in line with the London Living Wage.
The role is flexible, rewarding, and tailored to fit around your lifestyle — with full training and support every step of the way.
The assessment process usually takes around three months and is designed to help us get to know you, your skills, and what you can offer.
Here’s what to expect
- Application form – a simple way for you to tell us a little about yourself.
- Checks – including references, a DBS (criminal record check), a health check, and a health and safety check to make sure everything is safe and secure.
- Home visits – one of our friendly team will come and chat with you about your experience, your home, and how Shared Lives could work for you.
- Approval panel – once everything is complete, your assessment will be shared with an independent panel who will confirm your approval as a Shared Lives Carer.
