Freedom pass renewal application

The freedom pass renewal applications have now started, those passes which are due to expire 31 March 2024 will have received a renewal letter. You will be required to submit a renewal application online by the 29 January 2024. For those applicants who have not received a letter, please submit your disabled freedom pass renewal application online.

Freedom pass for older persons

The Older Persons Freedom Pass entitles the holder to concessionary travel on buses, trains and other forms of local public transport. Commonly called a freedom pass, these passes are paid for by the council, but are issued by London Councils on our behalf.

To be eligible for an Older Persons Freedom Pass, the applicant must be aged over 66+ and resident in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The age eligibility can be confirmed by accessing London Council's Freedom Pass website.

The freedom pass allows you to travel on London's public transport including:

  • Buses
  • London Underground
  • London Overground
  • Dockland Light Railway
  • Trams

Renewals

In mid-December London Councils will be writing to a number of older person Freedom Pass holders inviting them to renew their pass online or by post. For the 2022 renewal we will only be writing to those who we believe have moved address.

We will be carrying out usage checks and will be writing to those pass holders who TfL have confirmed have not used their pass within the last 24 months.

The data matching exercise, and residency check will be carried out for the remaining pass holders who have used their pass. If the checks show they are still at the same address, their new card will be automatically posted in mid-February and they do not need to take any action.
