Construction starts on much-needed family homes in Bethnal Green

Buckhurst St for web

Work to build six, four-bedroom homes in Buckhurst Street on the site of disused garages has started.

The Deputy Mayor of Tower Hamlets Maium Talukdar and Councillor Kabir Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Inclusive Development and Housebuilding, visited the site for a progress update with developers Elkins Construction.

The homes are part of the 109 units currently on site that Tower Hamlets Council is building, and part of the commitment to deliver 4,000 new social homes for rent.

Cllr Ahmed said: “This development is for family sized homes, which are so important for residents in Tower Hamlets who are living in severely overcrowded conditions.

“These new homes are going to make a huge difference to the families who move into them by improving their quality of life enormously.

“It’s great that construction is underway, and I am looking forward to seeing the finished homes.”

Construction is underway and due to complete in 2026.
