New leaders of tomorrow break down barriers to bring change

I Can Be Graduation

Graduates pose with councillors and speakers

Graduates poised to be the new leaders of tomorrow were praised for their vision and commitment to creating a fairer borough.

More than 50 residents took part in an intensive leadership course this year, run by Tower Hamlets Council, aimed at increasing the number of Black, Asian and Multi-Ethnic people in community leadership roles.

In 2023, UK citizens from ethnic minorities made up 14% of the population but only 2% accounted held board positions across the majority of employment sectors.

The council hosted a graduation event at the Town Hall on October 28 to celebrate participants’ achievements.

National award-winning organisation Olmec delivered the community leaders of tomorrow training as part of the council’s I Can Be … campaign aimed at reducing racial inequalities.

Many of the graduates spoke about their positive experience during the course and how they have succeeded in gaining board and community roles.

Graduate Usha Kong, who is a coach, inspirational speaker and social enterprise leader said:

“Ultimately representation does matter. But true representation is not just about being seen or being heard it’s about having a seat at the table where decisions are being made and being able to influence those decisions. It’s about taking action and driving changes that are needed so our communities are not just included but truly served.

“Black on Board has equipped me with the knowledge, the confidence and the networks to step more fully into that work. My next steps are to take everything I have learned into the boardroom and beyond, to use my voice, my experience and my leadership to help create the change I want to see.”

Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman said:

“I Can Be … aims to pave the way for a new generation of community leaders, and we particularly encourage women, young people, and disabled people to come forward.

“My heartfelt congratulations to the I Can Be... graduates. You do our borough proud and I can't wait to see your future success and ongoing positive impact on our local community.”

Cllr Bodrul Choudhury, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Equalities and Social Inclusion met with graduates and awarded certificates at the event.

He said:

“I am incredibly proud of the residents who have completed the I Can Be… Community leadership programme.

“Their commitment and courage to step into leadership roles is inspiring. This initiative is a vital step in ensuring our community leadership reflects the rich diversity of Tower Hamlets.

“We are building a borough where everyone has the opportunity to lead and make a difference.”
