Tower Hamlets Council has secured £1.2m from the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund in partnership with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, paving the way for hundreds of new charging points across the borough.
The funding will deliver more than 300 new fast chargers (7–22kw) in Tower Hamlets over the next two years, with installations starting in early 2026. The project also includes the introduction of accessible rapid chargers across both boroughs, making it significantly easier for drivers to transition to cleaner travel.
This week, the Council launched a procurement exercise to appoint a supplier to deliver the programme, which represents the next stage in expanding Tower Hamlets’ charging network.
The announcement builds on the borough’s record-breaking rollout of 2,000 new electric vehicle charging points through a partnership with Ubitricity earlier this year.
That scheme, one of the fastest rollouts of public charging points in the UK, moved Tower Hamlets from 19th to 3rd in London for the number of public chargers available, with over 2,370 now in operation.
Councillor Shafi Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Environment and the Climate Emergency, said:
“The Council is committed to making Tower Hamlets one of the easiest places for residents and businesses to switch to electric vehicles. The pace and scale of our charger installations this year is evidence of that commitment. This new funding, alongside the UK’s fastest ever charger rollout, means we can continue to support a cleaner, healthier borough while giving residents the confidence that charging will be easy, accessible, and reliable.”
Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, added:
“We’re determined to make Tower Hamlets a net zero borough and to tackle the climate emergency on a local level. Expanding sustainable travel options is an essential part of this mission. More of our residents and businesses are switching to electric vehicles – Tower Hamlets has over 5,400 registered plug-in vehicles, which represents an increase of over 200% from the previous 4-years. This investment ensures we’re both meeting today’s demand, but also preparing for the future, so that everyone in Tower Hamlets can benefit from cleaner air and a more sustainable borough.”
