Tower Hamlets Council has commissioned a varied programme of events and activities throughout October to mark Black History Month.
Standing Firm in Power and Pride is the national theme for Black History Month 2025, and it is a powerful tribute to the resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community across the globe.
The council is inviting people of all backgrounds to celebrate those individuals and communities in our borough.
Lutfur Rahman, Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said: “We’re proud to support Black History Month 2025 with a vibrant programme of events - an important annual opportunity to come together to celebrate the immense contributions of people of African and Caribbean descent to British society.
"This year’s theme, Standing Firm in Power and Pride, pays tribute to the leadership and strength of Black communities to drive positive change and build a more equal and just world. We’re excited to support this programme to help bring people together to learn, reflect, and celebrate the lasting impact of Black heritage and culture."
Activities include:

Poplar Union host a series of free cultural events and activities including a film night, an art exhibition, a concert by Grand Union Orchestra, a poetry night, and Somali and Lindy Hop dance classes.
Councillor Kamrul Hussain, Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, said: “The theme for Black History Month 2025 is a powerful tribute to the resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community across the globe.
This year, the theme highlights the profound contributions made by Black people be they leaders, activists, or pioneers who have shaped history, while also looking towards a future of continued empowerment, unity, and growth.
"We are proud to celebrate those individuals and communities in our borough. We are supporting a month-long programme of activities through which people of all backgrounds can come together, enjoy a diverse line-up of what’s on offer, learn and engage.”
