Tower Hamlets foster and kinship carers honoured at annual celebration

Foster carer celebration

Foster carers celebrated for their dedication

Nearly 100 foster and kinship carers were celebrated at Tower Hamlets Council’s annual carers celebration event on Friday 10 October, held during National Kinship Care Week.

The evening, held at Tower Hamlets Town Hall, brought together carers and staff from across the borough to recognise the extraordinary dedication carers have to children and young people in care.

Hosted by the council, the event featured a sit-down dinner, disco, and dance performances, offering a heartfelt thank you to those who provide loving, safe and stable homes to some of the borough’s most vulnerable children.

Carers who have supported children over many years were presented with awards in recognition for their long-service, with some foster carers dedicating over 20 years to fostering.

This year’s event also shone a spotlight on kinship carers – family members and close friends who step in to care for children when their parents are unable to. Their vital role was recognised alongside foster carers, with a guest address from Jahnine Davis, the Department for Education’s National Kinship Care Ambassador, whose role involves advocating for kinship carers and improving kinship care services and supporting standards in England.

Deputy Mayor of Tower Hamlets and Cabinet Member for Education, Youth and Lifelong Learning, said:

“Our foster and kinship carers are the unsung heroes of our community. They open their hearts and homes to children who need them most, offering not just a roof over their heads, but stability, love, and a sense of belonging.

“This event is a small way for us to say thank you for the life-changing work they do every day.”

The evening was also an opportunity for carers to share their experiences, connect with peers, and reflect on the impact they’ve made over the past year and beyond.

Tower Hamlets Council remains committed to supporting its fostering and kinship care community and is always looking for more people to join its network of carers.
