Please also be aware that we operate a cashless office and accept card payments only.  Please note that we are unable to accept American Express/Diners Club and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

 

Copies of birth, marriage and death certificates

If you wish to obtain a copy of a certificate for a birth, marriage or death that was registered in Tower Hamlets, you may apply by telephone, in person or download one of the online forms on this page and post it to our office. 

To get a copy of a certificate for a birth, marriage or death, you will need to provide the following information:

  • which certificate you require – that is, for a birth, marriage or death
  • the name or names the certificate applies to
  • the date of the event - if this is not possible then at least the year and the monthly quarter
  • the district in which the event took place
  • if applying for a birth certificate, include the parents details including the mother’s maiden name
  • any other relevant information that may help locate the certificate.

A short birth certificate shows the person’s name, sex, date of birth and registration district of birth. The standard or full birth certificate – which is needed when applying for a passport and/or other forms of ID also shows place of birth, parents names and occupations.

Applying in person

You may attend at our offices during our opening hours to make an application in person.  Please download, print and complete the application form prior to attending at our offices.

A fee of £10 is payable for all certificate applications. You will be able to collect your certificate after five working days from the date of application.

You can make an urgent application for a certificate in person. The fee for an urgent application is £40 and your certificate will be ready for collection on the same day.

Applying by telephone

We are unable to accept applications by telephone. In order to apply for a certificate by telephone, please contact the General Register Office on 0300 123 1837.

Applying by post

You may make a postal application enclosing either a covering note or a downloadable application form giving the details of the certificate.

All postal applications should be sent to Tower Hamlets Register Office, Bromley Public Hall, Bow Road, London, E3 3AA.  Please enclose a cheque or postal order with your application made payable to London Borough of Tower Hamlets together with a stamped addressed envelope.
