How do you want anti-social drinking tackled in Tower Hamlets?

Residents in Tower Hamlets are being asked how anti-social drinking should be tackled in the borough.

There is currently a responsible drinking Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in place, which covers all public places in Tower Hamlets.

It means that if alcohol is being consumed or a person is in possession of it and antisocial behaviour is happening or is likely to happen, a Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officer (THEO) or a police officer can tell a person to stop drinking the alcohol and/or surrender any open or unopened containers of alcohol.

It is an offence under the PSPO not to comply and a person can be subject to a fixed penalty notice with a fine of £100.

The PSPO is due to expire on 18 October as they only last for three years.

Residents are being asked whether they want to keep the order, alter it, or get rid of it.

Cllr Abu Talha Chowdhury, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, said:

“The amount of anti-social behaviour linked to alcohol consumption has reduced every year since the first order was introduced and it has decreased by 65 per cent since 2020/21.

“However, we want to hear your views on how we can best tackle anti-social behaviour caused by drinking.

“I encourage everyone to take a couple of minutes to answer the short, anonymous survey.”
