Changes to parking restrictions due to coronavirus and new parking charges

From Monday 1 June, parking restrictions will resume and motorists will need a permit to park during controlled parking times. Anyone found to be parked without a permit may receive a Penalty Charge Notice.

We have issued more than 4,000 temporary parking permits to key workers and we will continue to support frontline NHS and school staff, emergency services and council social workers to park for free using new paperless virtual permits.

Parking charges

We are required to advertise any notice of variation of parking charges and other charges in a local newspaper, such as the East London Advertiser.

In accordance with the notice of variation of parking charges the Council in exercise of its powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and the Local Government Act 1985 duly advertised the changes in the East London Advertiser on 27 February 2020 that as from 1 April 2020 the charge for the issue of Permits and other charges were to increase.

Please note that the new fees and charges were delayed and a decision was taken to introduce them on Tuesday 12 May 2020 at 10am.

Diesel vehicle

There is growing evidence of the harmful effects diesel fumes can have on health and life expectancy. Pollution in Tower Hamlets is at unacceptable levels. For this reason, the council is charging extra for diesel vehicles to park in the borough to address the impact of diesel fuel on poor air quality and health and to encourage a move away from polluting vehicles.

How permit charges are calculated

The permit price is usually worked out by the vehicle’s CO2 emissions to give the price band, duration and appropriate surcharges. For vehicles registered before 1 March 2001 charges are based on the engine size.

When you apply online the system automatically works out the price. You can check this on the UK Registration Certificate or DVLA website.

As an example, see the table below showing how the cost of a resident permit has been worked out:
