Waste service strike

A number of Tower Hamlets Council frontline waste service workers and street cleansers will be going on strike from 18 September to 1 October due to a national pay dispute.

Despite the council working to maintain services for residents, the strike will impact collections and cleansing across the borough. We apologise in advance for the disruption this will cause.

Find out more about the strike.

Parking charges

We are required to advertise any notice of variation of parking charges and other charges in a local newspaper, such as the East London Advertiser.

In accordance with the notice of variation of parking charges the council in exercise of its powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and the Local Government Act 1985 duly advertised the changes in the East London Advertiser on 10 March 2023 that as from 01 April 2023 the charge for cashless parking were to increase and from 05 April 2023 the permits and other charges were to increase.

Diesel vehicle

There is growing evidence of the harmful effects diesel fumes can have on health and life expectancy.

Pollution in Tower Hamlets is at unacceptable levels. The council has a supplementary charge for diesel vehicles to park in the borough. This will lessen the impact of diesel fuel on poor air quality and health and to encourage a move away from polluting vehicles.

How permit charges are calculated

The permit price is usually worked out by the vehicle’s CO2 emissions. For vehicles registered before 1 March 2001, charges are based on the engine size.

There is also a surcharge for the second and third permit at the property in addition to a diesel vehicle. You can check the vehicle details on the UK Registration Certificate (V5C) or DVLA website.

When you apply online, the system automatically works out the price. However, you should not continue if you think the permit price may be incorrect.

This could happen if the previous tenant has not cancelled their permit. Instead, you should contact the parking team to look into the matter.
