How to apply for building regulations approval

You can apply online through the government’s Planning Portal. Here, you can complete your application form; attach supporting documents and plans and calculate the fee.

You’ll need to pay the appropriate fee when you have submitted your application.

What happens after you submit an application

Full plans and building notice

We'll come to inspect your building work at the start, end and at various stages to make sure it complies with building regulations.

After you’ve submitted your application, you must let us know at least two working days before work starts. For more details go to the site inspection page.

Regularisation certificate

We’ll check your application and contact you to arrange an inspection.It may be necessary to open up and uncover parts of the work so that we can inspect it. You might need to make alterations.

Some applications will require a site location plan to be submitted with completed forms as well as other documentation. Plans can be purchased from the Planning Portal
