7 vehicles impounded for displaying stolen or lost blue badges during another day of action

Blue Badge Day

Seven cars were impounded during a day of action in which more than 100 blue badges were checked across Tower Hamlets.

Blue badges allow those with a disability or health condition to park closer to their destination. However, sadly, some people steal blue badges to sell on or use themselves, or they are sometimes used fraudulently.

The council’s parking and mobility Services and the fraud investigations unit, along with the Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officers (THEOs) and the Metropolitan Police, carried out a day of checking blue badges across the borough on 26 May.

During the operation, 12 badges were classed as stolen and seven vehicles were impounded.

Two badges were being used although the holders were shown as deceased.

The council’s fraud investigation service is investigating and will interview all those found to be misusing badges.

This follows on from previous days of action targeting blue badge misuse in November last year and March this year, which saw 130 blue badges checked and 13 cars impounded.

Further days of action are planned throughout the year.

Lutfur Rahman, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said:

“Blue badges are a symbol of independence for disabled people in the borough and illegally using a blue badge which isn’t yours isn’t a victimless crime.

“I’d like to thank the teams who took part in this successful day of action.”
