On-the-spot fines can now be given to those who break the byelaws in parks and open spaces in Tower Hamlets to make them safer and more inclusive.

Following a consultation to which more than 500 residents responded, the council’s Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officers (THEOs) can give out £80 fines to those behaving anti socially, including playing excessively loud music, having a barbecue, and breaking or tampering with any life-saving equipment.

Previously, those breaking the byelaws could only be prosecuted through the court, which is an expensive procedure and can take a long time to be concluded.

These new fines will enable the police and council’s enforcement teams to crack down more effectively on anti-social behaviour.

Persistent offenders can still be taken to court, where the maximum fine is £500.

Cllr Abu Talha Chowdhury, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, said:

“We have so many wonderful parks and green spaces that all our residents should be able to enjoy without having to witness anti-social behaviour.

“I am very pleased our THEOs and police have been given these additional powers to crack down on those who ruin our parks for others.”
