Support services for older people
Older people can face unique barriers when experiencing domestic abuse, such as dependency on partners or carers, health or mobility issues, financial concerns, and stigma. Abuse may take many forms and is sometimes overlooked or misattributed to ageing.
Specialist services provide safe and accessible support, including advocacy, housing, financial advice, counselling, and links to health and social care. Peer support and befriending schemes can also help reduce isolation.
Professionals must be able to recognise abuse in later life, challenge ageist assumptions, and signpost to specialist services, ensuring that every older survivor is safe, respected, and supported.
