My Tower Hamlets account

If you pay council tax or business rates in Tower Hamlets you can set up an account to access and manage your own information online.

You can:

  • Check the balance and details of your account
  • View any discounts or reductions you may have been granted
  • Apply for an exemption or discount online
  • Make a payment online
  • Change your method of  payment to direct debit
  • Tell us about your change of address or contact details

Registering for an online account

You will need to register to view your council tax or business rates account online. Once your registration has been approved we will send you a user ID in the post (to your billing address) and password by email.

User IDs and passwords are allocated to individual customers who are responsible for paying council tax or business rates on properties in the borough. Each customer will need to register for their own ID and password.

Using your online account

Once you have received your ID and password, you can log in.

The system operates in a secure (SSL) environment. Once you have logged in you can check that the environment is secure by looking for the ‘https://’ in the URL at the top of the screen. Your user ID and password will provide you with access to your own account details. You must keep these details safe and not share them with anyone.  Remember to logout when you have finished.

Any online payments you make, will take up to 3 working days to show on your account.

You can also set up a direct debit online, if the bank account is in your name and you are the only person required to authorise debits from the account. If the bank account is not in your name or more than one person is required to authorise debits from the account you will need to download and complete a paper direct debit instruction and post it to the address on the form:

Alternatively, you can contact us and we will take your instruction over the phone or post you the form.

To complete a direct debit instruction online simply:

  1. Login (using your user ID and password)
  2. Select  the council tax or business rates account number you wish to view
  3. Select ‘change payment method’ and following the instructions

The normal direct debit guarantee applies. Once you have submitted your application you will receive a letter from us confirming your direct debit Instruction and providing at least 10 working days notice of both the amount to be debited from your account and the date on which the payment will be taken.

If you wish to amend an existing direct debit instruction, you will need to contact the council tax or business rates team.  In your online account, use the Contact us link in the top menu bar for information on how to easily contact a member of staff who can help with an enquiry about your account.


If you are moving into/out of a property, or changing address within Tower Hamlets you can complete an online moving house or moving business property form to let us know about your change of circumstances. These forms can both be found in your account in top menu bar.

Online account availability

This service is normally available between 6am and midnight, 7 days a week. It may be temporarily unavailable during times of ad-hoc system maintenance.
