How to pay your Council Tax bill
We offer several ways to pay your Council Tax.
Paying by Direct Debit, online banking or standing order helps us reduce costs
These payment methods help us to avoid card handling fees and keep costs low.
Please pay by one of these ways if you can.
Recommended: Pay by Direct Debit
Direct Debit is the easiest way to pay. It’s automatic, secure, and protected by your bank.
Benefits of Direct Debit:
- No need to remember payment dates
- Payments adjust automatically if your bill changes
- You’re protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee
Flexible Direct Debit payment dates
You can choose to pay on day 1, 10, 20 or 26 of the month.
Set up Direct Debit:
Your payment will appear as ‘LBTH Council Tax’ on your bank statement.

You can make a payment from your bank account.

Pay in person
You can pay at any location that displays the PayPoint or Post Office symbol.
Bring your bill with you so they can scan the barcode.

Pay by debit or credit card or phone
You can pay online using a debit or credit card.
What you need:
- Your Council Tax account number (on your bill)
- A valid debit or credit card
We do not accept:
- American Express
- Diners Club
- Solo cards

Pay by BACS / CHAPS
Please make separate payments for each address
This means they can be processed automatically on the day we receive them.
It also helps us to keep costs low.
If you make a payment incorrectly it means it may not get allocated.
- Only quote the 10-digit Council Tax reference number from your bill as the payment reference
- Do not add dates or extra digits to the reference
- Please make individual BACS payments for each invoice reference instead of a bulk payment for multiple invoices
- Please do not pay business rates and other invoices to this account

You do not need to send a remittance advice if you are paying a single invoice.
If you have to make a bulk payment for multiple addresses
- The payment reference must be COUNCILTAX
- Do not quote one of the invoice references
- Only pay Council Tax bills into this account

Bulk payments remittance emails
Please make sure your email subject line has these details:
- The words ‘Council Tax Bulk Payment’
- The total amount you are paying
- Your organisation’s name
In the email body or an attachment, please send each 10-digit Council Tax reference number and its payment amount to Revenues.Remittances@towerhamlets.gov.uk

Pay from outside the UK
If you’re paying in a currency other than pounds sterling, you must cover any exchange rate costs or shortfalls.
